    Spoonerisms

Spoonerism: A transposition of sounds of two or more words, especially a ludicrous one, such as 'Let me sew you to your sheet' for 'Let me show you to your seat.'

    Select Spoonerisms

(manufactured in Oxford and fathered on William Archibald Spooner (1844 - 1930), for thirteen years Dean, and later Warden, of New College)

In a sermon in New College chapel: 'Yes, Our Lord is indeed a shoving leopard.'

Announcing the hymns in Chapel: 'Hymn 175, Kinquering Congs their titles take.'

In another college sermon: 'Which of us has not felt in his heart a half-warmed fish?'

    At the optician's:
'Have you got a signifying glass?'
    'A what, sir?'
    'A signifying glass.'
'I don't think we stock them, sir.'
    'Oh well, it doesn't magnify.'

Proposing a toast: 'Let us drink to the queer old Dean.'

To a former undergraduate: ' I remember your name perfectly, but I just cannot think of your face.'

To a defaulting undergraduate: 'Sir, you have tasted a whole worm. You have hissed my mystery lectures. You were fighting a liar in the quadrangle. You will leave Oxford by the town drain.'

    A Young Girl's Daybook, November 23

    young-daybook

    Outside my window...
Not a cloud in the sky, 72 degrees, and various palm trees poking up over the fence line.

    I am thinking...
of many things, most of them Thankgiving-related.

    I am thankful for...
Oma, and that she is able to be with us for Thanksgiving.

    From the learning rooms...
Finished up the last of my homework today, and I have one more class tomorrow before I am free for the rest of the week!

    From the kitchen...
Dad is taking the turkeys off of their bones, so the new ones can go in and start their culinary advventure.

    I am wearing...
Denim blouse, jeans, and bare feet that are cold on the tile.

    I am creating...
Sort of in a part-hiatus there... when I have time, I have been doing Granny squares in colorful cotton.

    I am going...
shopping sometime this week for ingredients etc.

    I am reading...
Transfer of Power for the umpteeth time, but I'm drooling over the new Vince Flynn book that Oma brought but I can't start yet...

    I am hoping...
that I won't get much homework on Teusday.

    I am praying...
For Miss Susan, who continues in delicate health.

    I am hearing...
scraping noises emanating from the roasters.

    Around the house...
still some polishing to do before the big day..

    One of my favorite things...
The dogs rapt attention when Dad shifts the turkeys..it's they only time they sit still!

A few plans for the rest of the week...

    Prep, Prep, Prep!

Here is a picture thought I am sharing...
For those uninitiated into the Stargate SG-1 circles, this picture will be incomprehensible... for those who are, I will simply say, 'kel-no-reem'.

  • Friday

Today started out with my usual Friday writing class, except this one was in Sun Lakes, because we've been staying there while Mom is gone.  Then, we packed up and headed over to Arizona Mills to meet Dad for lunch, after which we headed over to South Mountain Park for a hike. It's very pretty there, and much rock-climbing ensued.  Midway through, the sandals I had put on that morning in ignorance of our hike, broke.  That, of course, cut our hike short, and we turned around and got back to the car as quickly as possible.  When we got home, we had about an hour's respite, and then Dad and Jacob headed over to Karate, while I cut vegetables and tried my first foray into the realm of steak-cooking.  It idn't turn out bad at all, and now it is simmering in the pan with the veggies, wafting a delicious aroma around the house, while we expect Dad and Jake home in about five minutes or so.
Now I'm off to wrap presents, for a birthday party/baby shower on Sunday....
